The ‘ing’ sentence
Use the -ing version of the verb e.g to run-running
Remember the rule: When you finish your -ing phrase, place a comma then write the rest of the sentence.
Some -ing words- listening, watching,running, emerging, grasping, speaking, analysing, signaling, exposing, gossiping, acknowledging.
Examples: Realising the danger, people fled from the cities. Shaking away the nerves, he walked towards the microphone. Acknowledging the speaker, he bowed his head in silence.
Speaking quietly, I hope that the others can’t hear me.
Watching I gasp in horror, as the jump scare comes on the screen.
Acknowledging the teacher, I look up from my work to make eye contact.
Running past the finish line, I fall down as my legs ache
The ‘ed’ sentence
Use the ed version of the verb e.g to jog-jogged. This makes for a punchy start to your sentence.
Remember the rule: When you finish your ‘ed’ phrase, place a comma, then write the rest of the sentence.
Some ed words - frustrated, surprised, excited, committed, undaunted, determined, overpowered, concerned, delighted, enthralled.
