This experiment was just like the last one. Apart from that we got a strip of filter paper and used a felt to put a dot on the paper I used a dark shade of purple. We then did the same process of letting it set in a test tube apart this time the liquid we used was water. After letting it sit in water it separates into pink dark blue and light blue.
I am a Year 9 student in the Uru Mānuka Cluster. This is a place where I will share my learning. Please note that some of it will not be complete, it will be my first drafts. Remember to be positive, thoughtful and helpful when you leave a comment.

Chemistry experiment
We started off by putting a teaspoon of sand
and 5 small leaves in a mortar and pestle.
We then tipped in some acetone and grinned it.
After it was a thick substance and almost looked
like mowed grass we got a toothpick and put a
small dot of the grinned up substance on a small
strip of filter paper, Tipped some chromatography
solution into a test tube and then placed the filter
paper into the test tube so that the dot was just
above the liquid. After being in the test tube for
a while the green dot separated into sections of
brown green and yellow.

Shark infested custard team building task
What interpersonal skill did you use today? We used our team working skills.
How did it help with the success of the activity? That we worked together by putting a hoop on the ground three people stepped into the front hoop and the other two people steeped from the back hoop into the middle hoop someone in the middle hoop without dragging it or stepping out of the hoop pick it up and pass it to the people in the front hoop they put it in front and we kept moving into the hoop in front until we reached the end.
Who did you work with that went well today? Today I worked well with my entire group Patrick, Isiah, Maddie and Quaiden.
If you were to do it again, how would you do it differently? If I was to do it again I wouldn't drag the hoop or step out of it because we then had to go back to the start because we would have got "bitten by a shark"

Film techniques
Close up shot
A close up shot is zoomed in on the charters face so that you can see their facial expressions.
Medium shot
A medium shot is where you can see half of the charter’s body and what they are doing.
Establishing shot
An establishing shot is where it is zoomed out so you can see where the scene is taking place.
High angle
Shot from above to show that the charter is either scared or frightened.
Low angle
Where the camera looks up and is to make the charter look powerful.
Flat angle
A flat angle is where the camera is in line with the subject- has a neutral effect on the audience.
Full shot
Where you can see the whole scene of what the charter is doing.
High-key lighting
High key lighting is where it is really bright to make it look happy, bright and positive.
Low-key lighting
Low key lighting is where it is darker to make it look sad or scary.

Digestive system
What is the use of these?
Esophagus- The esophagus is a tube that carries food and liquids from the mouth to the stomach.
Stomach- The stomach temporarily keeps food stored which then goes through from the esophagus to the stomach where it then gets broken down.
Small Intestine- Small Intestine takes all the nutritions from your food and into your stomach.
Liver- The liver helps by taking away any unwanted fats.
Large Intestine- The large intestine absorbs water and salt from the stuff that hasn’t been digested and gets rid of waste that has been left.
The journey food takes? The food goes in the mouth to the esophagus to the stomach then to the small intestine and it ends by going through the large intestine and it ends by getting rid of it.
The organ's food goes through? The food gets ingested/swallowed, your brain absorbs the food. The food then gets digested, then gets egested/got rid of.
Chaos
a) Define Chaos. Chaos is crazy, all over the place and unorganized.
b) What are some chaotic events you have learned about in social studies? Some chaotic events that I have learnt about in social studies are about tsunamis and earthquakes.
How have people responded to them? Get to higher ground.
c) How does Ricky face and respond to chaos? Ricky gets upset and runs away and when Hector outed him he got angry and shot Hector luckily it was only a flesh wound.
d) How does Hector face and respond to chaos? Hector is calm and collected and is nice when there is conflict.
Black death
What century was the black death and what parts of the world did it affect? The black death went from 1347 to 1351. The black death affected North Africa, Europe. And Eurasia which comprises all of Europe and Asia.
Symptoms of black death coughing up blood, fever, boils, spasms, can't speak clearly and diarrhea
Who were the victims of the black death? People over the age of 60 apparently managed better than people in their late 50's. Although it was said that older men were particularly more likely to get the black death.
How were the dead buried? There was some uncertainty about how those that died were actually buried and how they got rid of the plague at the same time, it was said that they were wrapped and buried into shallow graves stacked on top of one another. In other theories it was also said that they were burnt to get rid of the plague.
What were the three strands of the plague? The three stands of the plague were called bubonic/swollen lymph nodes in the armpits and groin. Lymph nodes are small lumps of tissue that contain white blood cells, which fight infection, septicemic which is a very serious infection in the bloodstream, also known as blood poisoning. The third strand was pneumonic which affects the lungs.
P:E Athletics results
Athletics events that I have learnt this term. Is that triple jump is a thing.
Techniques helpful for each event are that when doing long jump you need to jump at a certain point otherwise it’s a no jump. High jump, You need to run fast and run on an angle when you get close to the mat and put your legs up high. Shot put make sure you put the hand that you don’t throw with. Straight and point it high at the sky. Discus make sure you get a good swing before you throw the discus.
Results from PE: Long Jump: two meters, High Jump: one meter, Discus: 11.52 meter, Shot put: 7.34 meters, Sprints: 18 seconds
Did you bring your PE gear each session? Yes I did bring my PE gear each Session.
Did you participate each week? Yes I did participate In PE every week.
I had fun dressing up in my kahui color for athletics.
Important Interpersonal Skills
Important Interpersonal Skills
Interpersonal Skill | What is it? | How do I show it in class? | How do I show it in sport / physical activity? | How do I show it at home? | Why is this interpersonal skill important? |
Verbal communication | The words that we use and how me say them using a clear voice and using appropriate language | If you are speaking to someone for example you are giving a presentation you use a clear voice so that people can hear what you have to say | Calling out to people if someone in your team has the ball and there looking for someone to pass to you let them know your free and that they have someone to pass to | Using nice language when having a conversation and making sure that you’re not saying anything that you may later regret | So that you know what’s happening |
Non-verbal communication | Non-verbal communication is showed by your body language | By putting your hand up if you want to ask a question | Using eye contact and putting your hands up showing that you can be passed to | Listening and showing your parents eye contact so that they know that you are listening to what they have to say | To show people that your listening and that what they have to say is important |
Active Listening | Listen to what others are saying. Showing that you are listening | Listening to the teacher and making sure that they can see your paying attention | Making sure they can see you concentrating to what they have to say and make a little bit of eye contact when you can but by still playing the game | Looking and by not staring at a screen while people are trying to talk to you | So that people know that you are listening and so they know that you have interest in what they have to say |
Manaakitanga / Being Inclusive | Making sure that people aren’t feeling left out and by including people in games and activities | When making groups to make sure that everyone has a group and there not by them self | Passing the ball to people and making sure that everyone has a turn to have a go | Making sure that your siblings are included in what your doing and by not leaving them out | So that people don't feel excluded |
Negotiating / Compromising | Where you find a solution to a problem and everyone is happy with it in the end | Finding a different way to learn something if the other ways are to hard | If you are finding that the way that your playing isn’t working well then you discuss another way to play that everyone is happy with | If something isn’t working out you talk with the people at your house and make a compromise of a way to do it differently | So that things work out and you find some answers to solve the problem |

Dirty water experiment
Diluting the water we tipped out 100 ml of of dirty water and added 100 ml's of clean water we then repeated this process twice.
We then got out a metal retort stand, clamps, funnels and a concrete base a cloth and a piece of filter paper. First we screwed the retort stand into the base. Attached the clamps to the stand. We then put the funnels in the clamps in the top funnel we put the cloth and directly under it in the next funnel we put the filter paper.
When we used the funnels and the retort stand we tipped our dirty water into the top funnel and it filtered through and dripped into the next funnel. The top funnel had a cloth which helped to take out the bark, rocks and big clumps of dirt and in the second we had a piece of filter paper which caught the tiny pieces of dirt that where to small and went through the cloth. After going through the funnels it drips into the beaker underneath.
Did it work? Yes it semi did it separated the bark dirt and rocks from the water but after going through in the process overall the water did have any insoluble objects left in it and didn't seem to look as dirty all though it did have a yellow tinge in it.
Would I change anything? If I were to do this again the yes I would do it differently I would dilute it more then what we did.

My thoughts about the Hornby High School bell… I like how the bell changes every week instead of hearing the same thing all year and I also like how the bell is music instead of the old bell that is usually used in other schools.

Drawing task Health
What Interpersonal skill did you show/use today? The interpersonal skill that I used today was communication. Communication helped today so that we could draw the image the other person had in their hand.
How did it help with the success/lack of success, of the activity? It helped with the success that we were explaining the drawing clearly and if we were confused then we asked questions so that we had a clearer idea of what to do.
Who did you work with that went well today? Today the person that I worked well with was Toni.
If you were to do it again, how would you do it differently? If I were to do it again I would do it so that I have more time so that I don’t have to rush it as much.
